What does Bissacco mean?
Bisacco Coat of Arms
According to several sources, Bissacco is based on the word Bissacca,
a substantive from a Veneto dialect that means pocket or bag sewn
in the internal part of the clothes. This pocket or bag was used to
carry handkerchiefs, pocket books, keys, money, etc. It could be a nickname
given to someone who was not in the mood to help (keeping the hands always
inside the pockets), to someone who spends all his money or to someone who
keeps all his money inside the pockets (do not spend money). Bissacca, in regular
Italian, is spelled Bisaccia.
Bissaco, Bisacco or Bissacco?
Bissacco is the most common in Padova. I found, in Arre/PD, some people who had their
surnames changed to Bissaco due to errors in the certificate of birth. Almost
all the Bissacco descendants in Brazil have their surnames changed to Bissaco
too. Some researchers assert that Bisacco is a mispelling of Bissacco too.
Bisaccia, Bissacca and Bisacca
As Bissacco cames from the word Bissacca, and Bissacca means Bisaccia in Italian,
it's possible that these names have the same origin. So, it is not impossible that
people who has those surnames have the same ancestors. But it was not proved yet.
